When Ohio winter weather turns frigid, it’s important to take precautions to ensure your pets are safe. From festive cold weather clothes to checking water bowls, a few simple pet care safety tips will keep your furry friend warm and happy all season long. Here are five ways that Milford Animal Hospital protects its favorite pooches and felines:

Winter Pet Care Safety Tips

1. Head Inside

While a little snow play or a brisk walk can’t hurt, it’s best to leave your pets inside in bitter weather. Remember, if it’s too cold for you to sit outside, it feels the same to your dog or cat.

veterinarian2. Add A Coat

Do the coat test. If one coat doesn’t keep you warm, your pet’s fur coat won’t do the trick, either. Keep them toasty with boots, a jacket, or hoodie, and take a fun photo or two while you’re at it.

3. Give Them Shelter

If you do let your pet outside, make sure its shelter is warm and dry. No matter your pet’s outdoor comfort level or size, all houses, crates, and sheds should be safe and draft free.

4. Resist The Freeze

Check up on your pet’s water bowl often to make sure it isn’t frozen. Better yet, bring the water bowl inside to give your pet a chance to warm up.

5. Check Paws & Claws

Paws, tails, and ears are susceptible to frost. Check your dog or cat each time they come in. Look for early signs of frostbite such as waxy skin or blisters.
