Your tires are a crucial part of operating your vehicle safely, so it’s important to keep them in good shape. Privitt Auto Service Center, expert car repair and oil change specialists in Columbia, MO, explains below what it means when your tire tread is uneven and what you should do about it. Since 1963, this local auto shop has helped to keep Boone County drivers safe on the roads.

Here are a few common explanations behind uneven tread wear on your tires:

Common Tire Tread Issues & What They Mean

tiresMore Tread Wear In Middle Of Tire

If the tread shows more wear in the middle of the tire, it means your tire is overinflated. Check the manufacturer recommended tire pressure, and inflate your tires accordingly. Be sure to use a high-quality air gauge, as accurate tire pressure cannot be judged by visual inspection.

More Tread Wear On Edges Of Tire

If the tread shows more wear on the outside edges of the tire, underinflated tires are likely the culprit. Again, you should check the tire pressure using a quality air gauge and inflate your tires according to the recommended tire pressure, as stated by the manufacturer.

More Wear On One Edge

If the tires show wear on only one edge, it means your wheels are out of alignment. This simply means that they are angled improperly and that you should seek out a distinguished car repair service shop to adjust them.

Feathering

Feathering means your tires show uneven wear that alternates high and low on the outer edge. This can mean one of two things: either your wheels are out of alignment (see above) or the tires were not rotated properly. You should rotate your tires by moving them from one side of the vehicle to another, and from the front of the car to the back regularly. Just make sure you do this according to your vehicle's maintenance schedule. Regular rotation of your tires helps to prevent uneven tread wear.

Cupping

If the tire surfaces show indentations, also known as cupping, your suspension system (shocks, struts, or another component) may be worn out or damaged. Because of this, your suspension system may be putting unacceptable vertical pressure on your tires. Have a car repair professional inspect your vehicle and assess the problem.
