These days, many Americans spend the majority of their workdays in front of a computer. While clicking away on the keyboard may seem harmless, this sedentary activity can eventually lead to serious back pain. Here, Mid Rivers Chiropractic of Saint Peters, MO, explains how to avoid the spine-crippling effects of long days at the office.

back painAs you read this, you’re sitting in front of a computer, tablet, or mobile device. Pay attention to your posture—is your back hunched or your neck craned? Are you leaning forward? If so, it’s time to correct the way you’re sitting. When you’re in front of a digital device, your eyes should be directly in line with the screen, about an arm’s width away. Your feet should be planted firmly on the floor, and your spine and neck should be straight.

When you’re talking on the phone, your neck should also be upright, which means no more cradling it on your shoulder. If you’ve been practicing poor posture for a while, these adjustments may feel difficult to maintain at first. However, proper posture is key to avoiding neck and back pain.

Even if you practice perfect posture, sitting in one place all day is not ideal for your health. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to muscle degeneration, a foggy brain, a stiff spine, and a number of other risks. To combat this, take a break at least once an hour, or as often as you are able. Visit the restroom, take a stroll outside, stretch, or roll your shoulders forwards and backward. Your back, neck, and entire body will thank you.
