Do you spend hours each day in front of a screen? If you’re like many Americans, you may spend the majority of your workday staring at your computer, only to go home and stare at your TV screen. Unfortunately, all this “screen time” can have a detrimental effect on your eye health—leading to issues like blurriness, irritation, and pain and strain. West Chester, OH’s top optometrist, Daniel J. Kroger OD, will explain how to diminish the detrimental effects of this common problem.

Looking at screens has become an integral part of modern life. If your eyes are dry, red, or in pain due to constant screen time, you’re not alone. To reduce digital eyestrain, follow these optometrist-approved tips:

  • Adjust Your Settings: Your eyes feel tired in part due to overexposure to the blue light radiating from digital screens. To counteract this, turn down the brightness of your digital devices, including tablets, laptops, TV screens, and cell phones.
  • OptometristTake A Break: About every 20 minutes or so, spend 20 seconds looking at something at least 20 feet away. Fittingly, this is called the 20-20-20 rule. This helps readjust your eyes and reduce discomfort.
  • Keep Your Distance: The closer you are to the screen, the more intense the light is to your eyes. Keep all your digital devices as far away as comfortably possible to diminish eyestrain. Make sure the distance doesn’t cause you to squint, and adjust the text size as needed.
  • Ask Your Optometrist: Visit your eye doctor at least once a year, even if you don’t wear contact lenses or eyeglasses. Your eye doctor can give you the advice you need to maintain healthy, comfortable vision even in the face of perpetual screen time.
