Riding your bicycle to and from work, during errands, or even recreationally can help you stay fit and healthy, as well as reduce your carbon footprint. Many dedicated cyclists ride their bikes year-round, even during the winter months. If you are planning to use your bicycle throughout the winter, you will need to take the proper precautions to keep your gear in good condition.

Jim’s Bike & Key Shop of Columbia, MO, specializes in the assembly and maintenance of bicycles. Read on for their top five tips to keep your favorite mode of transportation running smoothly throughout the winter months.

  • Lubricate Your Chain: Exposure to extreme, wet weather can rust and corrode your bike chain. If your area is prone to snowstorms or even daily frost, apply bike lubricant or a heavy-duty lubricant such as WD-40 to your chain.
  • bicycleWipe Down & Wax Your Bike:  After each ride, wipe down the metal portions of your bicycle to protect against corrosion. To prevent moisture from damaging the metal on your bike, add a thin layer of car wax every couple of weeks.
  • Add Reflectors: Limited sunlight in the winter may force you to ride your bike in the dark. Protect yourself during early morning and evening rides by adding reflectors to your bike. These shiny marking will make it easier for cars to spot you, preventing collisions.
  • Inspect & Change Your Tires: Inspect your tires to ensure they are properly inflated and whole. If your area gets brutal winter weather but your desire to ride won’t let up, invest in file tread tires that offer additional grip.
  • Wipe Down Seat & Handles: While you protect the metal portions of your bicycle, it can be easy to neglect the softer portions—such as your leather or vinyl seat and your bike handles. Make sure you wipe these areas down as well to help preserve them beyond the winter season.
