Most vehicles are capable of towing a trailer when they’re properly equipped with a hitch. There are several basic types of trailers. Dump trailers are designed for rising to “dump” the contents supported by a hoist and prop rod. These are used when transporting items such as gravel, soil, or sand. Regardless of the type of trailer you have, there are some common tips to keep in mind for functionality and safety.

4 Helpful Trailer Towing Tips

Understanding Weight

Your tow vehicle, hitch, and trailer all have towing capacities or “weight ratings.” It is critical to consult the product manual for each of these items to confirm your weight restrictions. If the gross vehicle weight rating (GCWR) is higher than your tow limit, it shouldn’t be used with that vehicle even if your intention is to only partially load it.

Professional Installation

Dump TrailerFor those without experience installing such components, it is strongly recommended to have hitch installation professionally done. This includes the trailer hitch, the ball mount, the hitch ball, emergency chains, electrical wiring, and brakes. The hitch ball needs to be at a correct height to keep the trailer unit level. With dump trailers, all hoist-related equipment should be properly inspected and serviced.

Modify Your Driving

When you are towing a trailer, there are some noticeable differences to account for. Your vehicle is likely to accelerate more slowly, while requiring a greater stopping distance and greater turning distance. When passing, you will need to exercise caution to account for the length. Be conscious of the height of your trailer at all times as you encounter bridges, overhanging roofs, and tree limbs.

Anticipate & Monitor Swaying

When your hitch and trailer are compatible and properly installed, you should not encounter too much “swaying,” or lateral movement. Vehicles that are passing and wind gusts will result in some sway.  Trying to counter the swaying by adjusting your steering wheel is not recommended and worsens its distance.
