School isn’t just an environment for academics, it’s also where they learn the skills to adapt to new information and maintain a clear focus on the goals that will make their lives successful and happy. A self-confident child will develop  their own understanding of the world, master new challenges, and ask for help when they need it. Study Wizards Tutoring provides in-home tutoring services to students throughout the San Jose area, and has some helpful tips for parents who want to encourage their children and build their confidence.

Be specific with your praise. Everyone likes to be acknowledged when they do something well but children are also looking for their talents and abilities to be validated. Instead of showering your child with praise, tell them specifically what they did well. For example, instead of complimenting your child on how smart she is, tell her how proud you are to see how voraciously she has been reading this summer.

Listen to What They Have to Say. Actively engaging with your child, even in non-academic conversations will make them feel important and more likely to come to you for help when they're struggling with their school lessons.  Be conscientious about discussing their interests and not just what you want them to find interesting.

Engage in extracurricular activities. There's an important social component to self-confidence that some children miss out on when their socializing is limited to the classroom only. Signing up for a sport, activity, or club will give your child a chance to practice making friends in a new setting, without the pressure of schoolwork and earning good grades.

Of course, mastering new material is a great way to build self-confidence, and enlisting the help of a private tutor can expose your child to new and challenging material.
