A visit to family court is rarely easy and can be a stressful experience for the whole family. There are some important things to remember before you go to court that can help ensure the process moves as efficiently as possible. Attorney Jeannine M. Talbot of The Law Office and Mediation Center of Jeannine M. Talbot has been representing clients throughout the Torrington, Connecticut, area for over 20 years; below, she discusses three things to remember before going to family court.

1. Be Prepared

Work closely with your family lawyer to make sure you understand the major aspects of your case and what will be required of you once you walk into the courtroom. Have all pertinent paperwork and documentation with you; stay as calm and focused as you can. Also, family law court is a formal affair: dress neatly, tastefully, and respectfully.

2. Support Your Children

If your case is being referred to Family Services or a Guardian ad Litem is going to become involved in your case, do everything you can to relax and reassure your children before they meet with this individual.  Let them know that this person may want to talk to them, but they have nothing to fear and are completely safe.  Resist the urge to coach your children to say what you want them to say; this could be disastrous for your case.

3. Don't Leave Nasty Voicemails

For divorcing couples or couples in child custody situations, things can get contentious. It takes remarkably little for relations between exes or soon-to-be-exes to devolve into verbal sparring matches, threats and screaming. In our modern age of cell phones and voicemail, many exes make the mistake of leaving nasty voicemail messages on each other's' phones. Remember: these messages can be submitted to the courts and used as evidence against you.
