It’s bad enough when you can’t find your keys, but nothing is worse than haveing issues with your door’s lock. A residential locksmith will tell you that any number of things can go wrong with door locks but there are typically three problems that happen to almost everyone at some point. Bill’s Locksmith, Inc. in Thomasville, NC, offers the following tips when you encounter these common problems with door locks.

Here are three common issues with door locks and how to solve them:

  1. The Lock Sticks Or The Lock Is Frozen: If the lock is sticking, lubricate it with WD-40. Spray it directly into the spot where you insert the key. Wait a few minutes, insert the key and jiggle it a bit. This should solve the problem. If it’s winter the lock may be frozen. To defrost it, heat the key up useing a hair dryer or place the key in hot water or on top of a heater. Then, insert the warm key into the slot and jiggle it to defrost the lock. You may have to repeat the warming process a few times before the lock is completely defrosted.
  1. The Door Lock Won’t Latch: Adjust the strike plate. Unscrew the strike plate, reposition it into place, then tighten it. If that doesn’t solve the problem, purchase a new strike plate and screw it into place. A new strike plate can be purchased at any hardware store for a few dollars.Locksmith
  1. The Key Has Broken Off Inside The Lock: If the key has broken off inside the lock and you can see the tip of the key, get a long-nose pliers. Using the pliers, try to grab the end of the key and pull it straight out slowly. You should call a locksmith to not only repair the key but to also assess the lock for possible inside damage. If the key is completely stuck inside and you can’t grab the tip, call a residential locksmith to service the entire piece.
