Do you have a pond or water garden, but you’re concerned about how cold weather will affect it? Don’t worry; with 15 years of experience in pond maintenance, Clearly Aquatics in Bloomfield, NY, can help you prepare your pond for winter weather, starting with these helpful tips.

Ways To Protect Your Pond This Winter

1. Get Rid Of Leaves & Debris

When leaves begin to fall from trees, they can present a serious threat to the ecological balance of your pond. That’s because leaves will eventually decay, causing water pollution. Clearly Aquatics recommends installing leaf netting over the pond to prevent this. First, use a net to remove any leaves floating on the surface of the water. Also, remove any dying plant foliage from the pond.

2. Divide Your Plants

By now, you should have stopped feeding your plants, but you still need to prepare them for winter. Some plants won’t be able to survive freezing temperatures, so you should remove those plants and store them in their original containers in a basement or storage room. Other plants should be pruned and planted deep enough in the pond to protect their roots.

3. Prepare Your Fish

PondWhen temperatures begin to drop, the metabolism of your fish will slow; they will be in a state of hibernation. You should decrease the amount of food they’re given throughout the fall so that when temperatures drop to 50 degrees or below, you’re no longer feeding them at all. Any food left in your fish’s gut when they go dormant can rot and cause them to die.

4. Winterize Your Pumps

If you rely on a pump to filter the water in your pond, you must take precautions to keep the water from freezing inside its plumbing in case of a power outage.  Turning off the pump for the winter is recommended, but not necessary, provided you routinely inspect it for signs of frozen water.
