As Alaskans prepare themselves for another winter, it’s important to also make sure their vehicles are ready. GMG General offers the following tips to keep you safe on the roads this winter. Serving Anchorage, Alaska, for nearly 30 years, these snow removal professionals have seen it all and want you to be prepared.

Visit a Mechanic For Routine Vehicle Maintenance

Check that your vehicle’s battery has sufficient voltage, and make sure the car has the proper levels of coolant and windshield wiper fluid. Check the tires’ treads and pressure; if you plan to use specific snow tires, put them on before snowstorms are in the forecast.

Keep an Eye On Road Repairs

In general, keep an eye out for road construction. Strong winter storms can wreak havoc on the roads. Road repair emergencies often crop up during the winter as a result of constant snow removal, sanding, and salting.

Create A Travel Checklist

Snow RemovalIf you know there’s a storm in the forecast, the best thing to do is to stay home; however, that’s not always possible. If you plan to make a trip, check the weather forecast for the entire route. Keep your gas tank half full, and stock your car with blankets, hats, scarves, and gloves.

Proceed With Caution

Slow down so you don’t become a danger on the road. Give yourself extra time when approaching stop signs and stoplights.

If Stranded, Don’t Panic

If you do get stranded in a very bad storm, don’t panic. If you are unable to get help, the safest thing to do is to stay with your vehicle. It will provide temporary shelter and make it easier for rescue workers to find you. Don’t leave the car running for long periods of time because you’ll need to conserve gas.
