Snow plows are great for getting snow out of the way, but for keeping cleared areas from accumulating more snow and ice, a spreader is the answer. A spreader is a machine affixed to the back of a pickup truck and filled with rock salt or snow melt pellets. In addition to providing more even coverage, you can spread the salt to a larger area at a significantly faster rate than if you were doing so by hand. Kalispell, MT’s Currier's Certified Welding Inc. is staffed by experts in snow plows and spreaders; here, they give their guide to the most popular types of snow removal equipment.

Tailgate Spreaders

snow plowThis is the simplest and most affordable model, consisting of a heavy-duty plastic hopper that mounts easily onto the back of your truck rather than sitting inside a trailer. It’s small, so it’s easy to handle and won’t obstruct vision while you drive in reverse, but it can’t hold nearly as much ice melt as other types of spreaders.

This spreader features 12 cubic feet of capacity, making it big enough for large jobs but with a conveniently compact high-torque motor. For a balance of strength, size, and ease of installation and use, the UTV V-Box spreaders are an excellent choice.
