If you’ve been having a difficult time getting pregnant, Thameside ObGyn Centre wants to remind you of the many different infertility treatments available. The effectiveness of these treatments improves every day, and these options are used by more and more people every year, with over half of infertile couples able to conceive as a result.

This women’s health center provides consultations to help determine which of these treatments is best for you:

  • infertility-women's-health-center-grotonDonor Eggs: If your ovaries have been damaged or you’re concerned about passing down genetic conditions, you could opt to conceive using a donor egg. Through a series of appointments over a period of several months, your OB/GYN service will induce increased ovulation in the donor, remove the eggs, inseminate the eggs with your partner’s sperm, and transfer the embryo to your uterus. Some women also freeze their own eggs to use in the future.

  • Infertility Surgery: Some people have genetic conditions that impact fertility, such as endometriosis—a phenomenon in which uterine tissue grows outside the uterus and blocks fertilization. These conditions can sometimes be treated through surgery.

  • Intrauterine Insemination: One of the most popular infertility treatments is intrauterine insemination. This technique involves sperm being directly introduced into the uterus through a small catheter. This technique is often combined with fertility drugs.

  • Fertility Drugs: These can be taken orally or via injection, and work by releasing hormones that increase ovulation. OB/GYN services tend to recommend this treatment for women with irregular menstrual cycles or whose partners have a low sperm count. It has a relatively high success rate, with roughly 40–50% of women becoming pregnant as a result.

  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): With ICSI, a single healthy sperm cell is injected into an egg through a microscopic needle. Afterward, the embryo is transferred to the uterus. ICSI is often recommended when one partner has a low sperm count.

  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): This is one of the costliest and most labor-intensive infertility treatments, but it allows couples with extremely low fertility to have children. IVF involves extracting eggs and introducing them to sperm in a laboratory setting. After fertilization, the chosen embryo(s) are implanted in the uterus.
