Winter is nearly here and temperatures have already begun to drop, which means it’s time to think about keeping your home warm. If you rely on oil heat in Connecticut, you probably know home heating oil prices vary a great deal. Since this is such a significant expenditure, it’s important to know what the current projections are for the upcoming season.

Every year, the U.S. Department of Energy puts out the Short-Term Energy and Winter Fuels Outlook. Here are some of the highlights from the latest, just-released report:

Lower Temperatures

home heating oil priceAccording to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, temperatures this winter are expected to be much lower. In the Northeast, the projection is that it will be about 17% colder. Predictions like this will have some variation — unexpected factors might play a part — but it seems you should gear up for a cold one.

An Uptick In Use

These harsher temperatures are expected to create an increased need for home heating. For those who use heating oil, the projection is you’ll pay approximately 38%, or about $378, more this winter. This number will grow if the Northeast winter turns out to be cooler, meaning some Connecticut residents might end up shelling out about $556 more between October and March.

Higher Costs For Crude

In addition to the lower temperatures, home heating oil prices are also subject to international and national market factors. Currently, global crude oil prices are expected to be around 24% higher than last winter. In the U.S., this translates to an increase of around 22 cents per gallon.
