Built in the 19th century, the Shrewsbury-Windle House of Madison, IN, is a historic home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Recently, Old World Plastering—the leading plastering contractor and ornamental restoration team in Butlerville, IN—was contracted to help preserve and resurface the home. Known for its impressive architectural details, the home is also a National Historic Landmark.

ornamental restorationThe Shrewsbury-Windle House is named partially for Captain Charles L. Shrewsbury, a Virginia native who was also the mayor of Shrewsbury. The home was built for him by a local architect, who designed it in the dominant Greek Revival style of the time. In 1948, the home was bought by John and Ann Windle, who renovated the property and eventually founded Historic Madison, Inc.

The main draw of this storied building is its unique architecture. The cube-shaped home features frieze-band windows and two separate, main entrances. One entry on the garden side features a wide porch flanked by lean columns, while the other, more modest entryway is topped with a distinctive petal-shaped motif. The same motif is mimicked over the windows on the bottom floor.

The interior is instantly fascinating, thanks to the dramatic, 53-step spiral staircase that extends from the bottom to the third floor. This freestanding structure is composed of pine and cherry woods, and is supported solely by its own weight. The home also has 12 rooms and 13 fireplaces.

As part of its ornamental restoration and historic preservation efforts, Old World Plastering will perform resurfacing services to give the home a facelift while retaining its old-world roots. With an impressive list of past jobs—including the restoration of historic columns at the Cincinnati Art Museum—Old World Plastering staffs only the most experienced, highly-trained professionals to perform unrivaled ornamental restoration and historic preservation projects.
