Gravel is the foundation for every paved driveway, patio, and walkway, but there are varieties used to serve different functions. If you value the quality and longevity of your paver, you should know which gravel to use for your project. Reputable gravel suppliers, like Hanson Aggregates, serving the Southwest Ohio area, have the experience to help you get the right gravel for the job at hand.

Here are the basic guidelines to follow when selecting the perfect type of gravel to use for pavers:

  • Fine: For areas experiencing foot traffic and furniture, including walkways and patios, fine gravel will form a solid base for your paver. It’s most advantageous in areas with sandy soil and excellent drainage. In high precipitation areas, or where drainage is poor, pools can collect underneath your paver, leaving it exposed to corrosion and the damaging effects of expanding and contracting water.
  • Medium: Medium gravel is a versatile paver foundation. It can be used for walkways and patios but offers enough support for driveways. Also, there are small spaces between the stones, allowing water to drain directly into the ground, which reduces erosion caused by runoff.
  • Coarse: Coarse gravel is best for heavy-duty applications. For high-traffic driveways or areas where boats or RVs park, it offers the greatest support under heavy loads. Offering the best drainage, coarse gravel makes it particularly useful in low-lying areas and clay soils.
  • gravelRecycled: For the environment and budget conscious consumer, a recycled gravel foundation might be a good alternative to traditional limestone gravel. Recycled gravel consists of crushed concrete, which contains large amounts of limestone and comes in the same three grades: fine, medium, and coarse. Because it isn’t sourced from new quarries, it’s considered a sustainable paver foundation, and it generally costs less.

Matching the type of gravel with your paver’s location and intended function will guarantee a long-lasting foundation for years to come.
