While the options on the pharmacy shelves seem endless and interchangeable, not all toothpastes are created equal. As part of your at-home dental care routine, it’s important to make sure you’re choosing a toothpaste that boosts your oral hygiene. But how do you know which toothpaste is best for you? Diane M. Evans DDS, Rush, NY’s top dentist, is here to help.

Here are three things to consider when you’re deciding on a toothpaste:

  • Tooth Sensitivity: If you happen to have teeth that are particularly sensitive to cold or hot sensations, choose a toothpaste specifically made to help with this issue. Over-the-counter options are usually more affordable, although your dentist will be able to give you a prescription for a stronger toothpaste should the readily available varieties prove ineffective for you.
  • oral hygieneAmount Of Fluoride: Almost all toothpastes will contain some amount of fluoride, which is known to protect teeth from decay and make enamel stronger. However, make sure your toothpaste has a fluoride count of at least 1,000 parts per million so you’re actually reaping the oral hygiene benefits of the mineral. Also, look for the seal of approval from the American Dental Association so you know the toothpaste has been approved.
  • Whitening Options: Toothpastes that claim to be effective at teeth whitening may not always live up to their promises right away, as they don’t contain enough ingredients to whiten teeth that quickly. However, their polishing or chemical agents can help to remove stains on the teeth, restore them to their natural color, and brighten them over the long term. Ask your dentist about options for whitening toothpastes, as some can increase the sensitivity of your teeth.

While the above guidelines should set you on the right path towards choosing a toothpaste, ultimately, you’ll know yours is working for you if you feel fresher after using it and it has noticeable effects on maintaining or increasing your oral hygiene.
