Many dental patients have questions about both plaque and tartar when visiting their dental office for a routine exam. At Mainwaring John D DDS, located in Orange, CT, they focus on general dentistry as well as keeping their patients completely informed on all things oral health.

Here are some of the key differences between plaque and tartar from the dental office.

Plaque

dental officePlaque is a soft, colorless, sticky film that builds up on the surface of teeth anywhere from four to 12 hours after you brush your teeth. This naturally forming substance contains bacteria that can negatively impact your oral health. Plaque can be compounded by the consumption of sugary foods and beverages releasing acid into your mouth. This plaque and sugar combination releases acid that can break down tooth enamel and lead to cavities. In addition to causing cavities, plaque can lead to the gum disease gingivitis. Luckily, regular brushing and flossing can help curb the buildup of plaque.

Tartar

Tartar forms as a result of residual plaque left on the teeth that combines with minerals in your saliva. Unlike plaque, tartar is a hard, crusty substance that builds up on teeth and near the gum line. Tartar buildup traps stains, and if left untreated can cause tooth discoloration. While plaque can be removed at home by routine brushing and flossing, tartar requires a visit to a dental office. Avoid tartar by using a great toothbrush, flossing after meals, and visiting your dentist at least twice a year for deep cleanings.
