Have you ever been unsure of what’s appropriate and what’s not while visiting a cemetery? The compassionate staff at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse, WI, is here to give you a few friendly reminders on the proper etiquette. Founded in 1852, Oak Grove is one of the oldest cemeteries in the state of Wisconsin. When you visit this historic cemetery, keep the following points of etiquette in mind.

cemeteryTread Lightly

Whether you want to get to your loved one’s grave quickly or are just walking through, remember to respect the deceased. Try to preserve the area by staying only on the paths and not allowing little ones to climb on headstones. If you’re unsure of where a specific grave is, ask the staff for assistance instead of wandering around.

Be Respectful

Being respectful in a cemetery goes beyond just respecting the actual area. Remember that you are not the only one who has lost a loved one and there may be others grieving as well. Be careful not to disturb them or the graves they may have decorated. Taking photos of graves is usually permitted, but do not photograph others who are mourning.

Mementos are best at home

Many people like to bring flowers, photos, and other small mementos to their loved one’s graves.  However, small and/or loose objects may get caught in or struck by the lawn equipment and cause injury.  Flowers in a vase stand are welcome but please keep mementos at home.  And please, make sure you don’t leave any trash behind including cigarette butts, lighters, paper, etc.

Even if you don’t have a loved one buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, the peaceful beauty of this cemetery alone will make the visit worth it. Just make sure you comply with proper etiquette to respect this tranquil place. Call Oak Grove Cemetery at (608) 782-6956, or visit them online for more information.
