Whether your driveway is cracked and filled with small potholes or another paved surface on your property is crumbling to bits, resurfacing is a common method to get concrete driveways and walkways looking like new again. But there’s more to concrete resurfacing than simply applying a new coat of cement. As the team at GMG General in Anchorage, AK, explains, there are some key preparatory steps involved before the actual resurfacing begins.

Here are three things that need to take place prior to concrete resurfacing:

  • Cleaning: One of the first things that needs to be done prior to resurfacing a concrete driveway or walkway is to clean the surface area. Even seemingly minor contaminants, like dirt or grease, can limit the effectiveness of the concrete overlay and prevent it from bonding to the existing surface. The cleaner your concrete surface is, the more successful your resurfacing project will be.
  • concreteRepairs & Removals: Resurfacing your driveway isn’t going to do much good if the fresh concrete is simply laid over a crumbly, unsound layer. Any parts of your driveway that are delaminated or scaled should be removed until a solid layer of concrete remains. In addition, any cracked areas should be repaired and reinforced so they don’t affect the fresh overlay.
  • Roughening: Once these initial steps have been completed, the final task is to roughen, or profile, the concrete surface of your driveway. This is typically done using a shot blaster or grinder to remove additional contaminants and low-quality concrete while leaving a roughened surface that will better “grip” the new concrete overlay. Once this is complete, the area is ready to be resurfaced.
