Flavorful and fascinating, sushi is one of the most popular Asian exports, and for good reason! Sushi is packed with healthy nutrients, low in unhealthy fats, and irresistibly tasty. But according to Isana Restaurant, Kihei’s number one spot for delicious and authentic sushi, not all sushi is created equal.

In fact, there are actually many different types of sushi. Below, Isana Restaurant explains four popular varieties:

  • kihei-sushi-Asian-cuisineSushi Rolls (Maki): This is the most common type of sushi. Rolls are made by carefully wrapping seafood, meat, or vegetables into rice and seaweed using a special bamboo mat.
  • Western Rolls: Western-style sushi, such as the ever-popular California roll, is almost identical to maki rolls with one exception: the rice is on the outside of the roll instead of the seaweed. These inside-out rolls are immensely popular and are great start for diners who are new to sushi.
  • Hand-Pressed (Nigiri): As its name suggests, nigiri is pressed rather than rolled. This type of sushi generally consists of a pressed mound of sticky rice with a slice of fish placed on top.
  • Scattered (Chirashi): Unlike pressed or rolled varieties of sushi, the chirashi variety consists of various delightful ingredients, like seafood, rice, and vegetables, displayed beautifully in a bowl. It’s not what Americans typically think of when they picture sushi, but it’s a delicious and satisfying dish you won’t want to miss!
