How To Properly Fill A Pothole

Step 1: Clear Away Debris

Pothole-Repair-Kalispell-MTBefore any work can be done, debris needs to be removed from the pothole and the surrounding area. Minor dirt accumulations aren’t worth worrying about, though, and neither is water.

Step 2: Begin Pouring & Tamping

Once all major debris has been cleaned out, start pouring asphalt into the pothole. Pour until a base that’s about 2 inches deep is established. Then, tamp the asphalt down until it is as compact and even as possible.

Step 3: Pour Layers To Fill The Hole

After the asphalt has been fully tamped, repeat the previous step until the hole is completely filled in. Continue to pour the asphalt in 2-inch-deep increments, tamping between each layer, until the hole is filled.

Step 4: Adding The Crown

Although the hole may be entirely filled, traffic will compact the asphalt even more. As such, add an extra “crown” layer on top of the pothole and tamp that down as well. After traffic begins to roll across the newly filled pothole, the surface should flatten until it is flush with the rest of the road.
