Psoriasis: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

skin careWhat Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an excess of skin cell production, which results in inflamed, red, and sometimes scaly skin. Because the skin cells are produced so rapidly, they build up and create patches that can affect knees, genitals, and scalp depending on the type.

What Causes Psoriasis?

While scientists are not certain what causes psoriasis, they know that genes and the immune system play integral roles. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, many people who inherit the genes for psoriasis do not ever exhibit symptoms as it takes a certain combination of genes to actually get psoriasis.

Are There Multiple Kinds of Psoriasis?

There are five main types of psoriasis: plaque, guttate, pustular, inverse, and erythrodermic. While their symptoms differ, they all stem from the same condition and patients can experience symptoms of multiple types simultaneously.

Are There Differences In Severity?

Psoriasis comes in three basic severities: mild, medium, and severe.  According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, mild affects less than 3% of your body; medium affects from three to 10% of your body; severe affects more than 10% of your body. It is worth noting psoriasis can still have a drastic impact on your life even if the coverage area is small.

Is Psoriasis Contagious?

Psoriasis is not contagious and cannot be passed from person to person through skin contact, swimming, or sexual activity. The AAD adds that it is normally triggered by a stressful event, certain medications, certain illnesses, the sun, and cold or dry weather rather than by exposure to someone with psoriasis.

Can Psoriasis Be Cured?

Currently, there is no permanent cure for psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic disease meaning that while treatments will not eliminate the disease, they will reduce its effects and improve the quality of life for those with the condition.

What Are The Treatments For Psoriasis?

There are numerous effective therapies for psoriasis. The experts at Central Carolina Dermatology Clinic recommend creams and ointments, an oral medication regimen, and phototherapy for reducing symptoms.
