Tubal reversal is a type of surgery conducted for women who wish to get pregnant after a previous fallopian tube contraceptive procedure.  At Ogeechee OB-GYN, Statesboro, GA’s top women’s health clinic, their team of professionals provides further explanation on the tubal reversal procedure.

Usually, the tubal reversal procedure can be conducted on an outpatient basis. The surgeon will make a two to three-inch cut in the lower abdomen. Then, using a microscope, the fallopian tubes are reattached. A standard tubal reversal takes about two to three hours to complete, with a few additional hours spent in the recovery room. Overnight hospital stays are usually not required, though some women may choose to do so, especially if the procedure is covered by their insurance.

tubal reversalThe success of a tubal reversal procedure depends largely on factors such as the length of the fallopian tubes, the age of the woman, and how the original contraceptive procedure was performed. After tubal reversal, the probability of pregnancy can range between 50% and 70% in women under the age of 40. However, being able to get pregnant after tubal reversal also depends on the woman’s age and quality of her eggs, as well as the condition of her pelvis.

Tubal reversal, if successful, is advantageous in that a woman can go on to get pregnant naturally without the need for an OB-GYN’s intervention or further procedures that involve drugs or hormones, such as in vitro fertilization. However, tubal reversal is, in the end, a surgery, which people may be wary of having. It can also come with a chance of an ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized egg is implanted outside the uterus.
