If you’re brushing, flossing, and maintaining regular visits to the dentist, you might think that you’re doing enough to avoid damage to your teeth. It turns out, however, that tooth wear can happen even to patients with great oral hygiene habits. To help his patients avoid tooth wear, Brian S. Kubo, DDS of Kamuela, HI, is here with some important information.

Below are the three most common causes of tooth wear and how to avoid them:

  • Abracosmetic-dentistry-Kamuela-HIsion: No dentist would say that regular brushing is bad for your teeth. In fact, brushing your teeth is the foundation for strong oral hygiene habits. However, you never want to brush too hard, as doing so can cause abrasion to your teeth, especially along the gum line. To avoid abrasion, brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid abrasive teeth whitening toothpastes.
  • Attrition: This form of tooth wear is caused by grinding and/or clenching. It’s especially common in children. While some degree of attrition takes place naturally as a result of chewing, you can avoid grinding and clenching during the night by using a mouth guard. Be sure to ask the dentist about which type of mouth guard is right for you.
  • Erosion: Teeth can become eroded as a result of ingesting acidic foods and drinks. To minimize your risk of erosion, drink milk or rinse your mouth out after consuming acidic foods or beverages to help neutralize the acid. Additionally, try to be moderate when it comes to consuming sodas, citrus fruit, sports drinks, and alcohol.
