Every cosmetic surgery procedure at the office of David K Hiranaka, M.D., D.M.D., begins with a consultation. With more than 22 years of experience practicing maxillofacial, facial plastic, and reconstructive surgery in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, the Harvard-educated physician and surgeon understands that planning for cosmetic surgery and recovery can feel overwhelming. That’s why he always makes himself available to answer key questions patients might have.

One of the most important questions patients need to consider is what their recovery will be like. Asking this question will allow patients to decide whether it is the right time to have a cosmetic procedure. To help ease anxiety patients might have about their post-cosmetic surgery recovery, Dr. Hiranaka answered some of the most common questions he gets during consultations.

Cosmetic Surgery FAQS

1. When Can I Drive?

Cosmetic SurgeryAfter any cosmetic surgery procedure, you will need someone to drive you home while the anesthesia wears off. Refrain from driving until you’re done taking prescription pain medication, which could be two days, a week, or longer. Before you embark on a road trip, make sure you can easily turn your head and neck and comfortably wear a seatbelt.

2. When Can I Go Back to Work?

Many procedures require less downtime than you might think. Most of Dr. Hiranaka’s patients are able to return to work just a week or two after cosmetic surgery; however, it all depends on the nature of the job. If you have an active job that requires heavy lifting, you might need more recovery time. During your consultation, Dr. Hiranaka will give you the best instructions for your situation.

3. When Can I Start Exercising Again?

After any cosmetic surgery procedure, it’s best to take a brief break from the gym. Exercise can strain your healing incisions, even if they’re located in areas that you’re not moving while you work out. This can delay healing and cause bleeding and more visible scarring. Dr. Hiranaka recommends taking about two to four weeks off. When you do go back to the gym, gradually build back to your previous fitness level to ensure optimal healthy and prevent injury.

4. When Can I Wear Makeup?

Cosmetic SurgeonIf you’ve had a facelift, you probably can’t wait to show off your youthful confidence. However, it will probably be about a week before you can use lotions or makeup. Then, to cover up any residual bruising, Dr. Hiranaka can recommend medical-grade camouflage makeup, which is safer and less irritating than liquid foundation.

If you have any more “When can I” questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to Dr. Hiranaka. He and his well-trained staff will walk you through all phases of your treatment and surgery.
