Nothing looks better than a lawn and garden that are well maintained. Serving both residential and commercial clients, Emerald Coast Landscaping has helped countless clients install drip irrigation systems to help take the headache out of lawn maintenance.

Here are their top tips for planning and designing a drip irrigation system to keep your yard looking great year-round:

  • Create A Plant Map: You should create a map of your property that denotes the location of all the plants that need to be watered. Drip irrigation systems are most effective for watering trees, shrubs, vegetables, flower beds, and potted or free plants. Next, divide plants with similar watering needs into the same categories. Make note of plants that are in full sun and others that are in shaded areas.
  • Determine What Kind Of Soil You Have: Soil is the mechanism through which plants get the water and nutrients that they need. However, soil is not universal. You must verify the type of soil you have to in order to come up with an effective watering plan. Do this by grabbing and releasing a handful of soil. Sandy soil will crumble, loamy soil will hold together but then break apart; and clay soil will hold together tightly.
  • Install The Proper Irrigation: The recommended irrigation setup for sandy soil is to use two gallon per hour (GPH) drippers roughly a foot apart. You could also use micro sprinklers and space them wider. Loamy soil requires one GPH drippers with spacing roughly a foot and a half apart. Clay soil only needs .5 GPH or one GPH drippers that are spaced roughly two feet apart.

Irrigation installation is well worth it, but it can be tricky to do on your own. Call Emerald Coast Landscaping at (251) 269-8128, or visit them online for more information.
