As New York happily says goodbye to the doom and gloom of this year’s rough winter to welcome in summer, a number of homeowners all over the state have begun tilling the garden, decorating their yard and, yes, preparing their pools. The question is: have you opened your pool yet?

If not, now is the time to do it. The process of preparing and chemical balancing your pool for summer may be time consuming, but it is simple to do provided you follow Gutierrez Pool Plastering’s expert tips. With a bit of patience, you’ll be diving into your own beautiful backyard oasis soon enough:

  • Water Level
Before anything else, the start of any successful pool opening begins with getting the pool up to proper level. Over the winter, water may evaporate from the covered pool, resulting in subpar water level. While leveling the water, be sure to remove any anti-freeze items and plugs from the pool.
  • Filtration & Cleaning
Restart your filtration system. At this point, you will also want to skim any large debris from the pool and vacuum any sand or algae that has built up over the winter months. The goal is to get the pool as pristine as possible before adding chemicals.
  • Test Water Chemistry
Before adding chemicals to the pool, it’s important to let the water circulate for at least 12 hours. At this point, you may test the water for pH, Alkalinity, and other pool quality factors.
  • Add Chemicals
Include the appropriate chemicals required to balance the chemistry of the pool at this time.
  • Wait!
Don’t jump in just yet. Allow the chemicals to work their magic and, within a week’s time, the pool water will be clear and ready to enjoy.
