The Promises of Romans 8

I once heard John Piper quote all of Romans 8 plus some from memory. Not only was I hearing the Word of God powerfully spoken, but what he said afterwards was pretty good too. One thing Piper said was that if you have Scripture in your head, you can pretty much meditate on it at any time i.e. “day and night” as in Psalm 1.

Today when I went to my Bible, Romans 8 fell out. This is owed in part to two things. First, Romans 8 is one of my favorite chapters of Scripture. That means I use it a little bit. But secondly, my Bible fell off the roof of our car one day. I was notorious for getting kids into their car seats and then driving away with pizza on the roof. But I only did it once with my Bible. So part of the reason the Bible page looks so used is that it was involved in an accident that day.

So why is Romans 8 so special? Well, I think because of at least five solemn promises of God. First, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. Second, we will be co-heirs with Christ in glory. Third, our present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory awaiting us in heaven. Fourth, we know that while not all things that happen to us seem good, still in all things God works for the good of those who love Him. Fifth, if God is for us, who could possibly stand against us! That means, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Thank you, Lord, for Your promises. Work everything for Your glory.
