Tooth fillings are used by dentists to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay back to their normal shape and function. Also, by sealing off holes or gaps in teeth, fillings help prevent further tooth decay. At the dental office of Dr. Stephanie ML Wong DMD in Honolulu, HI, the expert dentist and her team offer both metal and tooth-colored fillings to make their patients’ teeth strong and healthy once more.

If you have recently gotten a tooth filling, here are a few things you should know to properly care for it:

  • Determine Setting Time: Each type of tooth filling sets at a different time, and for this reason, you need to make sure you know what type of filling (amalgam, composite resin, cast gold, ceramic, or glass ionomer) you will receive so you do not eat earlier than recommended.
  • tooth-filling-honoluluAvoid Hard & Chewy Foods: To avoid accidentally pulling out your filling, try to steer clear of all hard and chewy foods for several days following your procedure. Otherwise, you could end up having to repeat it all over again. These foods in general are also more prone to sticking to your teeth, increasing your risk of further tooth decay.
  • Chew On The Other Side: In addition to avoiding certain foods for a few days following your tooth filling procedure, you should also make sure to chew on the opposite side of your mouth when you do eat. This will help protect your filling and make sure it sets properly.
  • Brush & Floss Every Day: To stave off further tooth decay and cavities and to increase the lifespan of your tooth filling, be sure to brush twice a day or preferably following every meal for the best dental care. Also, don’t forget to floss at least once a day to remove particles that can get lodged in between your teeth.
