Whether it’s because your headlight went out or because you were accidentally going 10 miles over the speed limit, you don’t want to be caught by a police officer without auto insurance. Luckily, Cornerstone Insurance in Hebron, Kentucky, offers the affordable insurance rates you need.

The auto insurance experts want to warn you of what may happen if you’re caught driving unprotected in Kentucky. This can happen one of two ways: Either a traffic official finds out when you’re pulled over, or the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet finds out during routine monitoring.

Here are four penalties you may face for breaking the law:

  • Pay A Fine: On your first offense, you will face a fine of between $500 and $1,000. In subsequent offenses, you will be required to pay between $1,000 and $2,500.
  • Go To Jail: The first time you are caught driving uninsured, you may face jail time of up to 90 days or a combination of jail time and a fine. If you commit future offenses, you can expect jail time of up to 180 days or a combination of a steeper fine and jail time.auto insurance
  • Lose Driving Privileges: Unless you can provide adequate proof of insurance in court, your registration will be suspended for one year the first time you are caught driving uninsured. On your second offense, your registration will again be suspended for a year. On your third offense and any thereafter, your registration will be revoked for two years.
  • Meet Reinstatement Requirements: To reinstate your registration and get back on the road, you will need to pay a $40 fee (on top of court fees). You will also need to provide solid proof of a new insurance policy. If your license was suspended for more than one year, you will need to retake and pass a driving exam.
