Since 1977, Aisen Chiryo Doin has provided shiatsu therapy to Honolulu residents. The massage technique has a rich history, with roots in ancient Japan and China and developments that span hundreds of years, eventually culminating in shiatsu massage as we know it today. It’s the gentle yet invigorating therapy that Sensei Namikoshi, the man who perfected the technique, originally referred to as being “like a mother’s love.” But how did the practice make it to Hawaii?

Read on to learn how the owner of Aisen Chiryo Doin, Sensei Fumihiko Indei, studied in Toyko, traveled around the world, and made his way to Honolulu:

Sensei Fumihiko Indei studied at Namikoshi Gakuen (Japan Shiatsu College) in Tokyo, the original college to teach shiatsu, under the guidance of founder Tokujiro Namikoshi and his son and current president of the college, Toru Namikoshi. After graduating in 1972, Sensei Indei then taught shiatsu there as an instructor. During his years as an instructor, he also traveled all over the world with the college president, helping to spread the art of shiatsu throughout Europe and Canada.

Shiatsu Massage In Honolulu

Sensei Fumihiko Indei finally arrived in Honolulu in 1977, hoping to bring shiatsu to as many people as possible with Sensei Namikoshi’s personal blessing. While some massage services had already been established in the area, Sensei Indei’s shiatsu practice was unique. It was much more gentle than other techniques, did not require the patient to disrobe, and used no oils or lotions. Patients could benefit from the tension-relieving massage comfortably, without feeling so exposed. Shiatsu massage continues to be recognized for all of these qualities.

Aisen Chiryo Doin is still owned and operated by the same award-winning shiatsu instructor, Sensei Fumihiko Indei.
