A home or office renovation project can be a fun and exciting way to introduce change and reinvigorate your space. But when you want to replace your wallcovering, it’s important to know a few basic guidelines to make it as clean and easy as possible. JD Painting & Decorating provides a wide variety of services, from roof coating to indoor painting, to the residents of Lihue and Wailuku, HI. They know how to remove wallpaper better than anybody in the area.

Here are their top five tips for removing wallpaper during a renovation:

  • Know Your Wall Type: The first step to removing wallpaper is knowing what type of wall you’re removing it from. Walls are usually built using plaster or drywall. Plaster, a material used in older buildings, is applied to wooden walls. It makes for quite a solid wallcovering.
  • renovationCheck For Strippable Wallpaper: Using a blunt knife, try tugging at the edge of your wallcovering. If it gives without much effort, your wallpaper is strippable and easy to remove. Just peel it away in one long motion with both hands, and your job is done.
  • Chemical Products: Using chemical strippers can help remove wallpaper that’s been covered with paint. Other products, like fabric softener mixed with water and soaked onto your wallpaper with a sponge, can also make the removal process simpler.
  • Moisten The Paste: When standard wallpaper paste has been used to apply your wallcovering, try softening it to help it come off more easily. Mix water and detergent and a bit of cellulose paste. The paste will help the water stay on the wallpaper so it can soak in and you can peel off the paper, hassle free.
  • Steam: For especially stubborn, old, or layered wallpaper, a steaming method might be your best bet. Use a steam wallpaper stripper, which uses extremely hot water to loosen the glue that sticks the paper to the wall. Steam strippers can be rented, or if you’re hiring a professional service for your renovation work, they will likely have one.
