Children’s toys often replicate the standard dump truck: a vehicle with a simple bed attached to a vertical hydraulic lift. You may think that’s the only one for your construction needs, but there are many more kinds to consider. C & W Trucking in Bayfield, WI, has dump trucks that vary by manufacturer, capacity, speed, weight, and other factors, and each type is suited for a slightly different job.

The professionals at C & W Trucking share some insight into three types of dump trucks and how to choose the best one for the job:

  • dump truckTransfer Dump Truck: These trucks haul trailers and containers. Use this vehicle if you have plenty of space and need to haul heavy loads, such as sand and gravel. The design of this truck allows for its increased capacity while still maneuvering easily. You can chain additional trailers behind a transfer dump truck, provided you adhere to local regulations.
  • Side Dump Truck: Using hydraulic rams, a two-axle semi-trailer, and a three-axle tractor, these dump trucks can dump to either side. They can unload quickly and carry heavy loads but are unable to maneuver as easily as other dump trucks. This type does not easily tip over, provided you do not interrupt an unloading in progress.
  • Standard Dump Truck: In addition to its simple design, which allows it to drop loads behind it, it has one axle at the front and a few in the rear, giving it exceptional maneuverability everywhere except for in soft soil. With a tight turning radius and ease backing up, a standard dump truck is a boon when you have limited space. Choose this vehicle type if you don’t have to haul heavy loads long distances.
