You have spent years building a collection of coins and now it is time to sell, or you have just inherited a group of coins and you do not know anything about them.  How do you determine who to trust with your collection?

  1. Research your dealer – Take the time to research which dealer can offer you the most expertise in evaluating your collection.  Take into account length of time in business as well as professional affiliations.  The Professional Numismatists Guild (PNGdealers.org) is the most important one of all!
  2. NEVER CLEAN YOUR COINS!  Collectors prefer coins in original condition.  You will ruin the value of your items with improper cleaning.  Bring them into us dirty!
  3. Ask questions- A professional dealer will be happy to answer your questions.  If your dealer looks like they are hiding something, they probably are.
  4. Bank references and payment- If you have a large and valuable collection be sure the dealer you choose can pay for the items.  Do not accept offers of selling on consignment for “more money” as this is often a ploy by a dealer that is not sufficiently funded to purchase the collection outright for a fair price.  Bullion related items should NEVER be given on consignment for sale.
  5. Always stay with your coins- Do not leave your coins for an offer.  You should never be away from your property, especially if you have inherited a collection that you have no knowledge of the value.  A crooked dealer can easily substitute a common coin that looks like a rare one.  If a coin needs to be sent for third party authentication take a picture of it!  Document anything that will not be sold immediately to the dealer to protect yourself.  An honest dealer will not mind, in fact, they will welcome the effort to protect you both.
