As Father’s Day approaches, there’s another reason for men to claim the spotlight in the weeks leading up to and around the occasion. June is marked as Men’s Health Month in the U.S and around the world, a period aimed at raising awareness around early diagnoses and treatments of disease among males of all ages. Providers, leaders, media, and other activists involved in health care and services use the month as a way to educate boys and men on the importance of regular medical checkups. Kona Community Hospital (KCH) in Kealakekua, HI, is committed to doing their part in spreading the word about Men’s Health . KCH offers full-service acute care hospital services and 24-hour emergency physician services.

heath care and servicesMost of Men’s Health Month is dedicated toward urging men and boys to get medical assistance, screenings, and physical examinations regularly to detect diseases early and get treated as soon as possible. Education about men’s health can be spread via health fairs, awareness fundraisers, and symposiums, while general awareness is raised through social media PSAs and events like Wear Blue Friday and distribution of Blue Ribbon pins among the community.

Key topics of focus during Men’s Health Month include top causes of death among males, sexual health, prostate cancer, and mental health. The month is also used as a way to offer health care and services around insurance and any other resources for anyone — not only men! — who have questions about men’s health but don’t know where to find answers.

In addition to their hospital and emergency care facilities, Kona Community Hospital offers programs developed to improve health and well being. Visit the hospital at their Kealakekua location or check out their website for more information.
