When pressure is applied on the big toe joint, it causes the big toe to gradually lean toward the second toe. As this happens, the bone structure on the foot starts to change, and this causes a bony bump, known as a bunion, to occur. According to Dr. Joseph G. DiPrima, Fairport and Rochester NY's top podiatrist, these bumps can be incredibly painful and may affect the person from wearing shoes or even walking. The good news is that with proper bunion treatment, pressure can be reduced on the big toe and help to correct foot deformities.

Along with treatment prescribed by your foot doctor, here are a few exercises that will help slow bunion progression, decrease symptoms, and increase your foot's flexibility:

  • All Toe Stretches: Toe exercises are helpful in keeping your toes spry and combating pain symptoms. Point your toes straight for five seconds, and follow this by curling them under for five seconds; do 10 reps of this stretch exercise. Another way to stretch your toes is to hold them against a wall or another hard surface. Flex and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise four more times.
  • bunionOnly Big Toe Stretches: Use your hand to very slowly and gently pull your big toe to its correct alignment. Hold for a minimum of 10 seconds; perform this three to five times. Adding resistance to your big toe is another way to stretch it. Use a towel to wrap around your big toe, and pull your toe toward you. At the same time, use your big toe to apply resistance and push forward.
  • Toe Strengthening: Take a towel and stretch it out on the floor. Use your toes to curl around the towel to pick it up. Repeat this exercise five times to help build toe strength and foot flexibility. You can also perform this type of exercise by placing marbles on the floor and gripping them with your toes to pick them up.
