While close to 50 percent of all straight marriages end in divorce, it is way too soon to make a statistical comparison of gay marriages' divorce rates.

In general, divorces tend to occur due to people not fully knowing, or understanding, one another at the time of marriage. However, many gay and lesbian couples have been together for significantly longer than straight couples prior to marriage (due to the recent lift of the gay marriage ban). Therefore, many lawyers suggest that divorce may not be such a dominant issue in the near term.

Additionally, same-sex couples who choose to marry tend to be older than newly married, opposite-sex couples. "Same-sex married couples on the whole tend also to have higher levels of education than those in different-sex marriages," explains Gary Gates, a Williams Distinguished Scholar at the UCLA School of Law's Williams Institute.
