On July 9th 2014, President Obama asked congressional leadership for $3.7 billion in emergency funds to bolster the U.S. border with Mexico. This move is aimed at solving the humanitarian crisis occurring on the southern border, which sees thousands of Central American children and teenagers trying to cross into the U.S every year.

This funding would also provide funds to ensure these unaccompanied children are taken care of. The Obama administration has warned that if this request is not approved, border security funds would dry up this summer.

President Obama has also urged parents of these children to stop sending them on the perilous journey to the border. According to Business Insider, the president calls for “an aggressive deterrence strategy focused on the removal and repatriation of recent border crossers.”
