Once kids have their baby teeth, it’s the perfect time to start flossing and teaching the importance of good dental hygiene. So how can you get your child engaged in their own dental care? Like anything, positive reinforcement and encouragement are great ways to teach your kids good habits — and a little fun doesn’t hurt either! The team at Honolulu’s Pediatric Dental Group suggests three top tips to make teeth cleaning fun.

  • Award Fun Stickers: Little ones can’t resist the power of stickers! Fun stickers are a great way to encourage adding a new habit into your children’s nightly routine. You can even create a simple chart to track your child’s dental hygiene progress each time they brush and floss.
  • Sing a Silly Song: Do you and your child like to make up silly songs together? Not only will a song make the dental hygiene routine more fun, but the length of the song can indicate how long they should keep flossing. Try adding new lyrics to a melody you both know, then take turns singing and flossing.
  • Be an Example: The best way to impart the importance of flossing and hygiene to your little ones is to provide a good example. Flossing and brushing alongside your kids is a powerful way to help kids understand that dental hygiene is an important part of each day, from childhood into adulthood, and kids love to watch their parents and mimic what grownups do.
