Many parents understand the importance of teaching children mathematics and science, but some do not see English as an equally important subject. At FasTracKids Eye Level Learning Center, NYC’s premier learning center for kids, they offer a comprehensive English program as well as their Math and Science programs. The goal of their English program is to help kids master reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.

Here, they highlight the importance of teaching children the English language to ensure their communication skills develop early on:

  1. Teach them now because it will be more difficult later. Young children are naturally curious and have innate-learning abilities. They are not self-conscious and are very motivated to learn languages when they are young. If they can learn a language easily now, this same process can be replicated later if they want to learn a second language.
  2. Motivate your child to be a life-long reader. If children learn to sit down alone and read a book now, they will be more comfortable doing it as they grow up. Reading is a solitary pursuit that is extremely fruitful and enjoyable, and greatly expands your knowledge. Share your joy of reading with them!
  3. Support healthy communication. If your child knows how to speak, write, and communicate with others, they will more likely be understood and understand others. This helps build their self-esteem and prepares them for school and later life.
  4. Encourage your child to express their feelings. Whether it be through talking or writing, learning the English language helps provide children with various methods of expression. For example, writing is often therapeutic, and children can learn that writing how they feel is perfectly fine and helpful in conceptualizing their thoughts.
