Here at Abriola Parkview Funeral Home in Trumbull, CT, we know losing a loved one is never easy. For more than 100 years, we’ve helped area residents hold services to honor the loved ones they’ve lost.

Of course, the funeral plans are only one hurdle to overcome, and in the days following your loved one’s service, you still have a journey of healing ahead of you. Each person handles grief differently, so there’s no “right” way to mourn.

However, from our experiences at the funeral home, we've learned there are some general steps you can take to get through this difficult time. Here are our tips for handling grief:

  • Get Help From Others: After a loss, you may feel as if you just want to be alone. While it’s understandable that you may not want to share your feelings with others, interacting with friends and family members can provide some relief. You might also want to consider joining a support group or turning to your religious community.

  • Have Patience With Yourself: Know that even after the funeral services are over and others seem to have moved on, you may still go through ups and downs. While healing is different for each person, it’s a process, not an event. Keep this in mind and allow yourself to express emotions in a way that feels right for you.
  • Stay Healthy: Make sure you continue to get adequate sleep, exercise regularly, and eat nutritionally. Staying healthy physically can impact your mood, too, so by making as many healthy decisions as you can, you’re giving yourself a chance to feel better emotionally.

While grief can feel lonely and as if it will never end, always know there are people and services available to help.
