California is home to two kinds of termites: drywood and subterranean termites. They literally eat your home from the inside out and can remain hidden to the homeowner for years before the extent of their damage becomes apparent. The National Pest Management Association estimates that termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage every year.

Each spring, after a rain, when the weather is sunny and warm is when termites swarm to reproduce and form new colonies. This is when termites are most visibly active. These swarmers are the future kings and queens of new colonies. If you know what to look for, you might be able to notice the tell-tale signs and schedule a termite inspection before the damage to your home becomes extensive.

Recognizing Signs of Termites during their Active Season

Knowing your enemy is the best defense against letting these pests set up a permanent residence in your home. Here’s what to look out for so you can best control termites:

●                        Swarming Termites: If you see a swarm of termites that then disappears, do not think they have gratefully flown off. The worker termites can still be within your home, slowly eating. If you have an infestation, you might also be able to catch tiny winged bugs flying out from under your carpets or through cracks in your walls or floors.

●                        Termite Wings: Termites wings are delicate. They lose their wings after a swarm. If you see a small pile of wings on your porch or near your home, save a few so our termite control specialists can identify them for you.

●                        Mud Tubes: Check the perimeter of your home for small tubes of mud coming from the ground and running along your foundation or side of the house. This is basically a tunnel through which termites travel from the ground into your home.

Termite Activity in Winter

Although termites become less active outside in the fall and winter in colder climates, termites remain active in regions where the temperature stays above 65 degrees. This is also true in cooler climates when termites are happily nesting in a heated structure. In the winter, the queen of the colony is busy laying eggs and can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day. Unfortunately, this means that a termite infestation is a year-round worry for homeowners.
