In observance of Stress Awareness Month this April, Main Street Radiology in Queens would like to help their patients manage their stress. With reduced stress comes a lower chance of developing health problems, while high stress levels can encourage people to smoke, overeat, or drink excessively—activities that have been linked to cancer development and other health threats.

To lower your risk of cancer, the mammogram and MRI screening experts recommend a low-stress lifestyle and the following tips to help you achieve it:

Mammogram

  • Listen To Music: Want to relax? Try playing something slow or ambient to get your mind settled down. If you play an instrument, play your favorite songs to help you unwind.
  • Play With An Animal: A few minutes snuggling or playing with a furry friend can reduce a significant amount of stress. There are even specially trained animals whose main job is to soothe people's anxiety.
  • Handwrite Your Plans: If being unprepared stresses you out, try writing your goals for the day in an actual notebook—not just a calendar app. The action of writing out your plans can make you feel more in control of them.
  • MRIEat A Healthy Snack: If you're feeling under pressure, simply eating a snack can set your mind in a different direction and maintain your sugar levels. If you're concerned about your weight, keep snacks such as almonds, celery, and sliced fruit on hand.
  • Stay On Top Of Your Health: Schedule regular checkups with your doctor and follow your physician's advice about medical screening. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends all women between the ages of 50 and 74 have a mammogram performed every other year; however, your doctor may determine that you need to start screening earlier or more frequently, depending on your personal and family history. Other crucial regular screenings include bone density testing and colonoscopies. Staying informed and prepared will put you at ease and keep you healthier.
