You always want to be prepared in case of an emergency, especially when it comes to your children. At Pediatric Dental Group in Honolulu, Hawaii, their pediatric dentistry provides the dental care and support you’ll need in case of an accident.

You may do everything you can to keep your children safe and healthy, but you still can’t always prevent an accident. Here are a few tips to prepare you for any scenario:

  • When a Primary Tooth is Knocked Out: Contact your children’s dentist right away. To ease swelling, apply a cold compress on the outside of the mouth. Don’t worry about locating the tooth. Never attempt to place the tooth back in the child’s mouth.
  • When a Permanent Tooth is Knocked Out: Find and gently rinse the tooth in cool water, without soap. Try to place the tooth in its socket with a clean cloth. If you’re worried your child may swallow it or cannot get it to fit, place the tooth in a cup of milk. See your dentist immediately; be sure to bring the tooth.
  • When a Tooth is Chipped or Broken: If there is blood or pain, call the dentist as soon as possible. A prompt pediatric dentistry visit can prevent infection and potentially repair the tooth. Have your child rinse his or her mouth with water and use a cold compress on the outside of the mouth to curb inflammation. If you’ve located the broken tooth part, be sure to bring it to the dentist.

In general, if you’re not sure as to the proper steps in case of an accident, call your children’s dentist for support.
