Proper dental care and hygiene is the best way to prevent tooth decay, but it’s also important to encourage children to make wise food choices so that they can have strong, healthy teeth. Here, Pediatric Dental Group of Honolulu, HI shares some foods that can help prevent tooth decay in children (and adults, too!):

  • Foods with Plenty of Calcium: This nutrient is critical for keeping teeth free of decay, especially as children grow. Dairy foods such as yogurt, milk, and cheese are a few options for calcium-rich foods, but calcium is also found in some non-dairy foods as well. For instance, leafy green vegetables like bok choy and broccoli are loaded with calcium.

  • Fruits and Vegetables: Regular teeth cleaning is important, but did you know that your body has its own way of cleaning teeth, too? Foods that are high in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, aid in saliva production, which amps up mineral defenses against decay. Bananas, oranges, and apples have lots of fiber, as do brussels sprouts and peas. Nuts such as almonds and peanuts also deliver lots of fiber.
  • Whole Grains: Whole grain foods contain magnesium, which is essential for healthy teeth and bones. In addition, eating whole grains will boost gum health, thanks to nutrients such as iron and B vitamins.
