Hawaii’s Top Professional Movers Explain How to Move Over Water, Ewa, Hawaii

Moving is a time and money commitment that you want to get right the first time. If you're moving over water, you have a number of factors in addition to the standard logistics to consider. Hawaii’s professional movers at Pearl City-based M. Dyer & Sons would like to share some important information and suggestions for making your move over a body of water as seamless and stress free as possible.

If your move involves transporting more than 4,000 pounds (the equivalent of a two-bedroom apartment), there are a few deciding factors when you're choosing between shipping in liftvans, wooden crates about 4 ft x 7 ft x 7ft, or shipping your belongings loose in an ocean container. The first thing you'll need to decide is whether you'll require storage. If so, your belongings should be packed in liftvans, which will be consolidated into an ocean container with other shipments and will save you money on ocean transportation costs.

By using liftvans, you will also avoid double handling your items to and from storage. This reduces any chance of damage to your belongings and any added expenses that will likely accompany having movers handle your items multiple times.

It's best to pack shipments under 3,500 pounds in wooden crates. But if you can receive your delivery within a few days of your shipment's arrival and do not need storage, packing your items directly into an ocean container will save you money. However, the transportation time will be increased by one to two weeks because shipments with other cargo must be separated from the ocean container and then loaded onto trucks to continue their journey. This may add anywhere from 10 to 15 additional days to the delivery date.
