When your child complains of a toothache, it can sometimes be hard to figure out exactly what the problem is. Younger children especially may have trouble explaining the type of pain they feel, and some even have trouble pinpointing its precise location.

Before heading to the dentist, there are some home dental care options you can try to alleviate the pain while you consider making an appointment with your dentist for kids. Pediatric Dental Group of Hawaii has these safe recommendations to try at home:

  • Try a Different Toothpaste: If your child's teeth are sensitive to heat or cold, a toothpaste specially designed for sensitive teeth can help put an end to this type of nerve pain. Children are also sometimes sensitive to strong flavors, and the traditional minty toothpastes used by adults can create a burning sensation on the tongue. Try a toothpaste with more kid-friendly flavors instead.
  • Use Ice Packs: While you are waiting for dental care, an ice pack held to the cheek or side of the face can alleviate some toothaches, including teething pain.
  • Rinse With Warm Salt Water: Sore or bleeding gums should be checked out by a pediatric dentist, but in the meantime you can try having your child gently rinse the mouth with warm water that contains a teaspoon of salt.
