Accidents happen, its part of human nature. Some of the worst pain a child can experience is when they have an accident that affects their teeth. Pediatric Dental Group of Honolulu, HI is available to provide safe, reliable dentistry for your children. An accident can strike at anytime though, so it’s important for parents to be prepared to tackle a dental emergency.

A dental emergency can include any of the following:

  • Cracked tooth: Rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it and then put a cold compress on the face to keep the swelling down.
  • Toothaches: First rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Then use floss to gently remove any food particles caught between the teeth.
  • Cut on the cheek or tongue: If your child bites their cheek or tongue, or cuts it any way, gently clean the area with water and apply a cold compress.
  • Items stuck in the mouth: Gently use floss to try and remove the object. Never use a sharp or pointed object to dislodge the item.
  • Knocked out permanent tooth: If your child knocks out one of their adult teeth it is important to keep the tooth moist at all times by either keeping it in milk or between the teeth and gums. If possible, have them keep it in place in the socket. Then get to the dentist or emergency room right away.

If your child experiences any of these emergencies, follow these guidelines and then get them to the dentist or emergency room as soon as possible.
