Fogging occurs when condensation is trapped between the two layers of dual-pane windows. This typically means that a seal somewhere around the window has failed, allowing water vapor to enter. A failing seal can also mean decreased energy efficiency, which costs you money over time as your home’s heating and cooling energy can escape through the flaw in the window seal. If the problem is caught early, fogged glass can be repaired at home using a few simple steps.

  • Clean Outer Panes: Using glass cleaner and crumpled newspaper, clean the outer panes of your windows. Using newspaper, rather than paper towels, will cut down on streaks. This step ensures that the moisture you see isn’t simply condensation on the outside of your windows.
  • Remove Insulating Pane: Using a utility knife, cut the insulating seal around the outer pane. Start at the bottom, and work your way up carefully to avoid dropping the glass. Repeat this process for the second pane.
  • Clean Inner Panes: Using the glass cleaner and newspaper, clean the inner panes of the windows. Remember to use a new piece of newspaper for this step to avoid streaking from oversaturated paper.
  • Reinstall & Reseal:: Replace the first pane of glass and seal it in place with silicone window caulking. Replace the silica spacer bars that separate the two panes of glass before reinstalling the second pane. These spacer bars can become saturated with moisture over time, which contributes to fogging. Reinstall the second pane and reseal with the silicone window caulking.
